Heat Build-Up in materials subjected to cyclic loading

Heat build-up occurs in a rubber-based material when it is subjected to high dynamic amplitudes of deformation. This property can be crucial or critical, depending on the final application.

A cylindrical specimen is subjected to a static force and continuously excited at a fixed frequency and controlled deformation amplitude. The dedicated HBU specimen holder is used to measure the surface temperature at one end of the specimen (~65°C), while a thermal needle probe can be pierced inside the specimen at the end of the test to measure the core temperature (~125°C).

Self-heating tests provide essential data for estimating the service performance and expected service life of finished rubber products.
